DESCRIPTION:Walk to End Alzheimer's comes to Moody Park on Sept. 26 Fairview Heights will host the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's on Saturday\, Sept. 26\, at Moody Park. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m.\, followed by an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and the walk at 10:30 a.m. Families\, caregivers\, businesses and neighbors from across the region will gather to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care\, support and research. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide\, Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to fight the disease. Treatments are now available that can slow the progression of Alzheimer's\, a moment families have waited decades to see. It offers real hope\, but much work remains. In St. Clair County alone\, an estimated 5\,400 residents age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's\, part of a national total topping 7 million Americans. To close that gap\, the Alzheimer's Association is investing more than $490 million in over 1\,220 active research projects in 56 countries\, work aimed at better treatment\, earlier detection and\, eventually\, a world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia. That research is funded in large part by events like the Belleville Area Walk. Money raised supports free programs through the Association's Illinois Chapter\, including a 24/7 Helpline\, care consultations\, education classes and support groups for people living with the disease and their caregivers\, along with the research driving new treatments forward. Anyone can take part\, whether by registering solo or forming a team with coworkers\, neighbors\, a place of worship or family. There is no fee to participate\, and prizes are available for top fundraisers\, though organizers encourage every walk participant to raise what they can ahead of the event. The route is family-friendly and accessible to walk participants of all ages and abilities. Each participant carries a Promise Garden flower during the opening ceremony\, its color marking a personal connection to the disease: blue for people living with Alzheimer's\, purple for those who have lost someone\, yellow for caregivers and supporters\, and orange for those who support the Association's vision of a world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
